Taking Maca

All our maca comes in a powdered form and is either activated or extracted. Activated maca is intended to be used long-term to bring harmony and balance back to the body and build resilience to stress. Extracted maca is intended to be used for short-term acute conditions to manage and alleviate symptoms or to tackle stubborn chronic conditions in combination with activated maca.

What is the best dose of maca to take:

For everybody the ideal dose of maca may differ slightly, there is no upper limit and everybody is different, so it is important to find your ideal dose that is right for your body, for some this may be less than the recommended for others it may be more. We recommend starting with 1-1.5 tsp per day of our activated maca powder or 1 tsp per day of our concentrated extracted (10:1) maca powder.

How to consume maca:

Maca has a malt and caramel flavour. It can be consumed sweet or savoury and goes well with spices and other aromatic flavours. Our activated maca is ready to eat and can be added to smoothies, juices, frappes, teas, lattes, porridge, muesli, granola, cereal, yoghurt, soups and stews. It can also be consumed in a hot drink with or without milk, honey or sugar. If adding maca to hot water it is best to make it up in a bit of cold water first into a paste then add it in to the hot water to prevent it from lumping together (similar to using cornflour). How to store and handle maca:

Maca is very shelf stable, after opening be sure to seal the bag after each use or store in an air-tight container. It is ok to store at room temperature just avoid exposing to humidity as it can adsorb moisture. Once opened our maca can keep for up to 2 years.

Does cooking maca destroy the nutrients:

The short answer to this question is no it doesn’t. Maca has always been traditionally sun dried and boiled before being consumed and needs to be cooked before you eat it. All our maca is pre-cooked so it is safe to put straight in your smoothie without needing to cook it first. You still can heat it again if you like however and it won’t affect the medicinal properties. To understand this please read our in-depth article on Why You Shouldn’t Eat Raw Maca.
